“Fame Monster: Bloggers”

In my previous post I could only feature homages to two of my favourite and most relevant blogs. So, here are the honourable mentions.

1. Style Rookie

Perhaps I should have created a single post to worship at the alter of Tavi, the Style Rookie. She is the 14 year old fashion blogger who took the industry by storm, not only because of her age but because of her unique style, personality and articulate opinions. To the extent that many people questioned whether a girl her age could be behind the blog – surely she must be a puppet, they cried. Alas, this young sensation has quite simply come to symbolise personal online style diaries + blogs. Just recently she was featured in LOVE magazine, POP magazine, Vogue Paris and seated front-row at New York Fashion Week…all this in between attending middle-school of course.

2. The Sartorialist + Garance Doré

The Sartorialist, or Scott Schuman, is the god-father of street-style blogging. Having previously been involved in the fashion industry, the Sart (as he’s affectionately known online) picked up his camera and started out posting shots of regular stylish people he came across in his home city, New York. With an eye for detail, the Sart soon notched up thousands of dedicated followers and soon caught the eye of blue-chip publishers and designers alike. Recently, he romantically teamed up with the equally talented artist, photographer and blogger Garance Doré creating what many saw as the union of a super-street style pair. Garance’s bubbly personality, charming “French-ness” and portraits of those inside and outside the industry have garnered her similar attention and acclaim. These two, along with Bryan Boy and Tommy Ton, made headlines earlier this year when they were seated front row at Dolce & Gabbana’s fashion show – complete with their own personal laptops to live-blog their experiences.

3. Style Bubble

Susie Bubble is perhaps the queen of the personal style blogs. With her quirky dressing and vivacious posts, Susie started blogging in March 2006. Starting out with her own personal inspiration, Susie began to post her own quirky outfits with funny and interactive commentary. Her personal blog led to her inception as a writer at the equally great Dazed Digital (online component of magazine Dazed & Confused).

4. Bryan Boy

It’s difficult to find the words to describe Bryan Boy – fabulous, camp, deliciously irreverent, creative – are only a few of many which spring to mind. For it’s this Pilipino blogger who gained a cult following because of his genuine love for fashion, personality and entertaining posts. All this has since culminated in Bryan Boy having his own bag, the BB, made and named after him by Marc Jacobs. And, when he tweeted that he would love for Dolce & Gabanna to lend him a fur coat – they promptly responded by giving him one as a gift. I was lucky enough to see him talk at a screening of a Marc Jacobs film at ACMI in Melbourne earlier this year and he was typically hilarious – saying after the event that he had to change his fringed Miu Miu top he was wearing because it was a “bitch to navigate in!”

5. Sea of Shoes

When Jane Aldrige started her blog, seaofshoes, and consequently unleashed her amazing and vast collection of shoes and clothes to the world she was bound to attract some sort of attention. Jane’s blog show-cases her unique personal style and envy-invoking collection of clothes and shoes by Chanel, Prada, Maison Martin Margiela, Miu Miu, Dries Van Noten amongst many others. She even managed to get rapper, Kanye West, on her bandwagon when he posted his admiration for her onto his own stylish blog: “PEEP THIS 16 YEAR OLDS BLOG FROM TEXAS! WHOOOA!!!” And the love was returned by Jane.

6. Jak and Jil

Tommy Ton from Jak and Jil Blog is another talented forerunner of the street-style phenomenon. Posting exquisite photos of mainly those from inside the fashion industry, Tommy Ton has become a legend in the online and offline world. His most famous photographs of delicious shoes prompted the stream of traffic that came to his blog. Last fashion month he was commissioned by style.com to showcase the fashion from New York, Paris, Milan and London.

7. PS – I Made This

This is the ultimate D.I.Y website. And the one you wish you had thought of creating yourself. This website takes key fashion ideas off the runway and dissects them for our viewing and creating pleasure. With its clean and simple layout design and instructions, PS I Made This helps you to make your own chic Chloe-esque denim on denim look or a spring-time shirt a la Proenza Schouler at a fraction of the cost.
